ARTLAB: Rationale.

While dance, visual arts, performance art, installation and live art are more than comfortable to include technology in an integrated way, dramatic theatre has been very reluctant to do so. If new media technologies are incorporated at all into dramatic theatre (which we define as traditional theatre that constructs a closed fictional world and is driven by plot), then it is largely an aesthetic backdrop, as part of the set, and not as an interactive 'live' element. The Mixed Reality Performance Lab responds to dramatic theatre's resistance to new technologies, seeking to investigate where the technology is capable of real-time spontaneous interaction with humans on stage; as well as to investigate how cross-disciplinary performance can incorporate narrative and other elements of the dramatic theatre craft.
